Research Dollars for Undergrad Women
Teams of female college students interested in research projects in
engineering or computer science can apply for a US$1000 stipend from a committee of the
Computing Research Association in Washington, D.C.
Find out how to apply on this IEEE Institute page.
How to get started in research
The best way to find a research project is to approach an EE professor. Some general hints:
- In general, you will have the most success in finding someone to supervise your work if you choose a professor who taught a course in which you got a very high grade.
- You should find and read the professor's research web page before your initial meeting.
- Many professors also look for computer experience because a lot of research involves computer simulations. Therefore you should brush up on your computer skills. If you're really serious about doing research, you may find CSE 373, Data Structures and Algorithms, a particularly useful course to take.
- Some professors advertise projects that are looking for students. Look through their web pages and/or see if there are flyers on their doors.
Be sure to check your EE email accounts frequently because the EE academic counselors will forward research opportunities that they receive from other Engineering disciplines.
You can get credit for doing research as an EE499 (for more info, see the Master Course Description), or you can even be paid for doing research. Check out our list of Current Research Projects Looking for Students.
Once you get started on a research project, we encourage you to apply for your own funding. An excellent source of funding is the Mary Gates Research Training Grants. Please read the Mary Gates Scholars Frequently Asked Questions page. Information sessions for the Mary Gates program are held at various times throughout the year.
Another program (with priority for UW students) is the WSGC Summer Undergraduate Research Program.
We also encourage you to submit your research results to the prestigious UW Undergraduate Research Program - Research Symposium.
If you're interested in a summer research experience at another university, you might be interested in Undergraduate Research Opportunities at Other Institutions.
