Abstract
We have developed a method for converting full-color
documents to four-color documents for printing. We propose
to optimize and fully assess the quality of this halftoning
method, termed quantized Dither (QD). QD would be
appropriate for commercial printing, where speed and
printing robustness are important, and where dither is
being used today. We have shown that QD maintains the
smoothness of dither while significantly sharpening edges
and enhancing color contrast, resulting in a potentially
much higher quality image while retaining parallelizability
(and thus speed) of method. This grant would cover
research into optimizing QD, and into theoretically and
experimentally comparing the quality of QD with halftoning
alternatives such as dither and error diffusion.
