Abstract
In a wireless network environment, common channel errors due to multipath fading, shadowing, and attenuation can cause bit errors and packet loss, which is quite different from the packet loss due to network congestion. In congestion control, the packet loss information can serve as an index of network congestion for effective rate adjustment. On the other hand, wireless packet loss mainly causes dramatic performance degradation. This project proposes a packet loss classification algorithm based on trend detection of relative one-trip time (ROTT) when ROTT falls in the ambiguous gray zone. Successful implementation of this algorithm can greatly improve the performance of wireless multimedia over IP (or simply Voice over IP, VoIP).
