Catching crooks with technology -- an engineer turned sleuth.

Abstract

It's obvious. Criminals live in the same technology saturated world that envelopes the rest of us. They can eavesdrop with the same miniature RF-linked microphones that we see in stores; their computers are running the same applications that are in ours. The interesting twist that this presents is the opportunity to use technology to catch crooks. Dr. Mitchell enjoys the thrill of the hunt -- as he looks for bugs in boardrooms and discovers clues in computers. This talk will show the technical tricks that he uses to find out what really happened. Come if you are interested in computer forensics, eavesdropping detection or if you like gadgets.

Biography

Before running his current company Dr. Mitchell did optics research and development in big companies and small startups. Between his BS and PhD at UW EE he flew for the US Navy in the US and Southeast Asia. He is a fellow of SPIE and senior member of IEEE. His work has been featured on NPR, the NY Times, Time, The Forensic Files and the usual technical journals.
