Biosketch
Ming-Ting Sun received his B.S. degree from National Taiwan University in 1976, M.S. degree from University of Texas at Arlington in 1981, and Ph.D. degree from University of California, Los Angeles in 1985, all in electrical engineering.
Dr. Sun joined the faculty of the University of Washington in September 1996. Before that, he was the Director of the Video Signal Processing Group at Bellcore (now Telcordia). He has been a chair Professor at Tsing Hwa University, and a visiting professor at Tokyo University, National Taiwan University, and National Chung-Cheng University.
His research interests include machine learning and video processing. Dr. Sun has been awarded 10 patents and has published more than 180 technical publications, including 13 book chapters in the area of video technology. He was actively involved in the development of H.261, MPEG-1, and MPEG-2 video coding standards. He has also co-edited a book entitled Compressed Video over Networks.
He was the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia during 2000-2001. He received an IEEE CASS Golden Jubilee Medal in 2000, and he was a co-chair of the SPIE VCIP (Visual Communication and Image Processing) 2000 Conference. He was the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (T-CSVT) during 1995-1997 and the Express Letter Editor of T-CSVT during 1993-1994. He was a co-recipient of the T-CSVT Best Paper Award in 1993. From 1988 to 1991 he served as the Chairman of the IEEE CAS Standards Committee and established an IEEE Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform Standard. He received an Award of Excellence from Bellcore in 1987 for the work on Digital Subscriber Line .
He was elected as a Fellow of the IEEE in 1996.
