Congratulations to Dave Allstot
Former Chair and holder of the Boeing-Egdvedt Chair David J. Allstot has decided to leave the University of Washington and become the first holder of the Texas Instruments Distinguished Chair in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas at Dallas.
Professor Allstot came to the Electrical Engineering Department in 1999 and his influence as a world class researcher, instructor and leader will leave a lasting impression on the department. David's senior leadership has moved the department in the direction of academia by increasing our PhD production and placing students in academic positions. While the department was in transition, David became acting Chair in July of 2004. During his tenure as acting chair and chair, David set on a course to reinvigorate the department. As acting chair he recruited two assistant professors in Josie Ammer and Brian Otis. He initiated and was able to push through new and improved curriculum requirements relaxing the mandatory core courses giving students greater flexibility and allowing undergraduates to concentrate their effort in relevant technologies.
David was able to expand our development opportunities. He initially concentrated his efforts at the annual ISSCC conference in San Francisco and has maintained that presence since 1999. As chair of the department, David saw the opportunity that the Centennial provided the department with an opening to kick start our development efforts. David supported the start of the departmental news letter "The Integrator" that is currently mailed to over 8,000 alumni and has allowed the department to reconnect with former graduates. These efforts have lead to an increase in development successes with the additions of the Peden Endowed Fellowship, the Lytle Lectureship Endowment, the Magnus Tate Crawford Endowed Scholarship, the Paul Leach Endowed Fellowship, and the Shanafelt Endowed Scholarship.
David will remain with the department through the summer. We will truly miss his senior leadership and his incredible sense of humor. David will be sorely missed but we wish him the best of luck and hope to hear about great things coming out of the University of Texas Dallas in the immediate future.
