Getting Started - New EE graduate students
Advising Office
The Advising Office is located in Allen Center EE Main Office, AE 140. We have an open door policy - stop by anytime with questions.
EE E-mail
Set up an EE email account. We encourage you to set up your account right away. Let Frankye Jones(fjones@ee.washington.edu), in EE Graduate Advising, know when you have set up your EE account. You will then be added to the current graduate student distribution list, and will receive department announcements. www.ee.washington.edu/computing/faq/new_account.html.
Grad Student Mailboxes
Graduate student mailboxes are located in the graduate student mailroom, next to the EE Main Office on the first floor of the Allen Center. Mail is delivered both late morning and late afternoon. Only business mail should be delivered here.
EE Building Use and Student Offices
Students should apply at the Main Office Reception Desk AE 100R, to have the Husky ID cards coded for building and lab/office access. Students need to be registered before applying for the coding.
Students should see their faculty advisor regarding location of their lab or office, and details about having a space in the lab or offices.

Registration - miscellaneous
The EE 592 Research Seminar is required of all students and is offered each Autumn Quarter. This is a good way to get to know your fellow first-year students and to find out about EE faculty and research projects.
To learn about the various independent study options and procedures, see http://www.ee.washington.edu/academic/graduate/gradis.htm.
To maintain graduate status, a student must be enrolled or must be on official On-Leave status for every quarter except for summer. See the Advising Office for on-leave forms and procedure. Fulltime students and students holding assistantships must be registered for a minimum of 10 credits/academic quarter.
Selecting an Advisor
New graduate students are assigned a Temporary Advisor who can assist students during the first quarter of study. All graduate students should select a Permanent Advisor with complimentary curriculum focus and research interests within the first quarter or two of study. It may be necessary to discuss your plans and interests with more than one faculty member before you find a good match.
Double MSEE Degrees
Students cannot earn a UW MSEE degree if they have already earned an MSEE or equivalent degree in a closely related area. Questions or appeals about this policy may be directed to the Graduate Program Coordinator.
Residency
All students who are eligible should apply for Washington State residency after one year of study. As quickly as possible after arriving in Washington state, students should get a Washington Driver's License, change voter registration, and keep records of lease/mortgage payments. After 12 months, students may complete and file the required Residency Petition forms. The Advising Office has the Residency forms on hand. For further information, contact the Residence Classification Office at 209 Schmitz (206) 543-4188.
